What’s the difference between an ‘assisted’ and ‘arranged’ marriage? What do Jesus and Sachin Tendulkar have in common, and why is it so embarrassing ordering mild food at Indian restaurants?

Laugh with some of the most exciting South Asian comics in Australia as they talk about jokes, race, culture, accents and so much more in SBS Audio’s hot new podcast – Comedy Karma!

Podcast host Aditya Gautam– anauthor, screenwriter and stand-up comedianoriginally from Delhi and now a proud Melbournian – invites those who make a living from making others laugh to spill the chai on the challenges of being a South Asian comedian and finding a sense of identity in a diverse Australia.

Aditya talks candidly about his own experiences, including becoming an Australian citizen and acknowledging his own privilege as a straight, middle-class man while drawing out the experiences of guests who, for example, identify as a “minority within a minority” including LGBTIQ+ people from South Asia.

“These are the funniest South Asian comedians in Australia, taking you into the world of being a funny, brown person and everything about identity, culture and comedy they have learned along the way,” he said.

It’s the new millennium and music is facing an existential threat: illegal piracy. In Red Flag: Music’s Failed Revolution Walkley Award-winning journalist Marc Fennell (The Kingdom, Framed, The Mission) uncovers the bizarre story of the Aussie start up, Guvera, that promised to revolutionise music forever, but instead vanished in a $180 million mystery. The two-part blackly comic docuseries premieres at 8.35pm Tuesday, 15 October on SBS and SBS On Demand.

Through exclusive interviews, never-before seen footage and photographs, incredible archive and dramatic reenactments, Red Flag: Music’s Failed Revolution charts the spectacular rise and fall of Guvera – the Gold Coast tech start-up that challenged Spotify and was nicknamed the “iTunes Killer”- which once had A-list superstars like Alice Cooper and Mos Def lining up behind it with one mission: to destroy internet piracy.

In the 2 x 1 hour docuseries, Marc is joined by iconic Australian musician Ben Lee as they take a nostalgic trip to the 90s, the golden age, before piracy threatened to take down the multi-billion-dollar music industry and an unlikely saviour. Guvera, emerged from the Gold Coast.

With an audacious plan to revolutionise the music industry by promising free, legal mp3 downloads (and later streaming), Guvera’s colourful founders offered a beacon of hope in an era dominated by illegal file sharing platforms like Napster and Pirate Bay. In a few short years, Guvera would take the world by storm – becoming the main player in the music downloading and streaming market and beating Spotify to launch in key markets. With its superstar following, glitzy parties and lucrative brand sponsorships, including Harley Davidson and The Australian Open, it raised an eye watering $180 million, but what was really going on behind closed doors?

As Marc digs deeper, red flags start to emerge, uncovering a web of shady business dealings, ethical question marks, a company on the brink, and many lives left in its wake. With candid interviews with former Guvera staff, devastated investors, music industry experts, and behind the scenes footage, the documentary delves into the darker side of the start-up and a “fake-it-till-you-make-it” story so familiar with other famous tech start-ups, fuelled by the unwavering belief that one big idea can change the world.

Presenter and Producer Marc Fennell said, “We’ve seen the explosion of social media, streaming and AI fundamentally shift how we interact, but the story of Guvera has largely been forgotten. The ambitions this company had were gargantuan, and their successes and failures have been too easily overlooked. There was a period where Australia could have been home to the next Spotify (before Spotify became a thing).

“It’s a roller-coaster of a story with euphoric highs and devastating lows. But most importantly, Guvera’s catastrophic implosion also reveals a brutal reality about Australia – our attitudes towards money, innovation, and risk.”

Red Flag: Music’s Failed Revolution will be subtitled in five languages, streaming on SBS On Demand in Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean.

Red Flag: Music’s Failed Revolution premieres on Tuesday 15 October at 8:35pm on SBS with both episodes available to stream free on SBS On Demand. The second and final episode will air on Tuesday 22 October at 8:35pm on SBS.

SBS reveals new landmark documentary-drama series ROBODEBT coming in 2025 https://www.sbs.com.au/aboutus/2024/09/12/sbs-reveals-new-landmark-documentary-drama-series-robodebt-coming-in-2025/ https://www.sbs.com.au/aboutus/2024/09/12/sbs-reveals-new-landmark-documentary-drama-series-robodebt-coming-in-2025/#respond Thu, 12 Sep 2024 01:47:00 +0000 https://sbscorp.dev-serv.net/?p=5374 Award-winning producers CJZ secure major funding through SBS first-of-its-kind initiative

The notorious Robodebt scheme has inspired an innovative and immersive landmark series that combines factual storytelling and high-end drama to take audiences beyond the headlines to experience the impact the scheme had on Australia’s most vulnerable citizens.

ROBODEBT (working title) is produced by CJZ, the production company behind International Emmy Award-winning Go Back to Where You Came From, after securing SBS’s new major development fund. Announced at the Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC), SBS launched the first-of-its-kind initiative to discover an original and ambitious idea that explores inequality and social cohesion and tackles the fault lines of Australian society today.

SBS Director of Television Kathryn Fink said: “Through this initiative, SBS wanted to unearth a series unlike anything seen on Australian screens before. ROBODEBT will reveal the fight for justice by some of the most vulnerable people in our society. We’re excited to be working with CJZ on this series, which will shine a much-needed spotlight on this unprecedented chapter in recent Australian history.”

CJZ Creative Director Michael Cordell said: “Robodebt inflicted a tsunami of pain on hundreds of thousands of ordinary Australians accused of having fictitious debts. We’re excited to be telling this story with an innovative combination of hard-nosed factual and high-end drama to push the limits of contemporary storytelling.”

The Robodebt scandal ranks as one of the darkest chapters in Australian history. In a highly politicised campaign to claw back money from social welfare recipients allegedly ‘rorting’ the system, $1.8 billion was extracted from over half-a-million people between 2015 and 2019. The scandal resulted in Australia’s largest class action, with a Royal Commission finding that the scheme was “crude and cruel” and “neither fair nor legal”.

Attached as series director is award-winning documentary and drama director Ben Lawrence (IthakaHearts and Bones). Esteemed screenwriter Jane Allen (Janet King, Cleverman, Last King of the Cross, Troppo, The Secret Life of Us) will serve as writer and script producer.

    Trailblazers: SBS’s new vodcast series chronicles African-Australian migrants making their mark https://www.sbs.com.au/aboutus/2024/08/30/trailblazers-sbss-new-vodcast-series-chronicles-african-australian-migrants-making-their-mark/ https://www.sbs.com.au/aboutus/2024/08/30/trailblazers-sbss-new-vodcast-series-chronicles-african-australian-migrants-making-their-mark/#respond Fri, 30 Aug 2024 02:39:42 +0000 https://sbscorp.dev-serv.net/?p=5318 In celebration of International Day for People of African Descent on 31 August, SBS presents a new five-part video series showcasing the inspiring stories of African migrants as they forge unique paths in Australia.

    From sharing their first impressions of Australia to offering valuable advice for future generations, SBS presents a new vodcast series that showcases the inspiring journeys of African migrants, highlighting their triumphs and challenges as they establish themselves in business, entertainment and other industries across Australia.

    Trailblazers has been crafted to support the growing number of young African migrants settling in Australia who speak a range of languages alongside English, as identified by the latest Census data. The bespoke series joins SBS’s slate of regular audio programs in languages spoken across Africa, including Amharic, Arabic, Dinka, French, Oromo, Portuguese, Somali, Swahili and Tigrinya.

    Hosted and produced by journalist Sharon Masige, who emigrated to Australia from Uganda 20 years ago, the series explores the diverse experiences that have shaped the lives of African migrants in Australia. Masige also shares reflections on her own journey, offering valuable insights and advice to the next generation of migrants eager to build a life in Australia.

    “With this series, I wanted to capture both the rewarding and challenging aspects of life in Australia, sharing stories that will inspire and encourage new migrants,” said Masige.

    “Why the title ‘Trailblazers’? Well, forging a unique path is never easy, especially when it challenges family and community expectations. Achieving success on this journey not only paves the way for others, but also motivates the next generation of African migrants who are curious about the opportunities in Australia.”

    “This series is important to me as there were some things I wish I had known before moving to Australia. Now, I’m honoured to share advice for others on their journey and am excited for what the next generation of African migrants will bring to Australia.”

    The five episodes feature talks with:

    • Community engagement manager Wanyika Mshila from Kenya, who built a career in the Australian arts and theatre industry;
    • Founder of Sydney’s Little Lagos Ade Adeniyi from Nigeria, who turned his vision for his homeland cuisine into a reality in the Australian restaurant industry;
    • Dancer and choreographer Lucky Lartey from Ghana, who is at the forefront of intercultural dance practices in Australia;
    • Business entrepreneur Alies Bol from Sudan who brought the richness of African prints to Australia’s activewear industry; and
    • Actor, writer and producer Belinda Jombwe from Uganda, who is making her mark in the Australian entertainment industry.

    The series is hosted and produced by Sharon Masige, with an all African-Australian crew.

    Trailblazers is available now on YouTube and SBS.com.au.

    SBS’s flagship settlement guide, Australia Explained, helps new migrants to settle and live well in Australia with practical information in more than 50 languages, across topics like health, housing, employment and more.
