This resource is based on the SBS drama Safe Home which explores the far-reaching impact of domestic and family violence* on individuals and communities. The materials focus on enhancing students’ media literacy skills through critically analysing how family violence is reported in the news.
In this resource you will find:
- Guiding questions to prompt meaningful discussions with teacher notes and suggestions to support productive conversations;
- Short video interviews with actors from the series for classroom use, accompanied by discussion prompts and activities;
- Individual, pair and collaborative activities for the classroom; and
- Extension activities.
*While the terminology around domestic and family violence differs from state to territory, this resource will use both terms interchangeably. We recognise, the series was developed in Victoria and family violence is the preferred term in that state.
Safe Home is a Kindling Pictures production for SBS. Major production investment from Screen Australia in association with SBS. Financed with support from VicScreen.
SBS Learn provides free Australian Curriculum aligned digital learning resources for teachers and educators. We create a wide range of printable and downloadable lesson plans for students.
We recommend you pre-screen the full-length episode before using in class. Head to SBS On Demand for personal viewing. For classroom viewing of whole episodes, please visit ClickView, or your school’s resource centre (for example Wingaru, Informit etc).
